An open magazine with a fjord photograph and a black shape

(Overview)

The brief

The publisher wanted a magazine people keep on the shelf, not in the recycling. Each issue follows one landscape through a season, told in long essays and even longer photographs.

The work

The format is large and the grid is loose: photographs run full page, and text gets generous margins and a single typeface in two sizes. Each issue opens with one black shape drawn from the landscape it covers, which became the magazine’s only recurring graphic.

The result

Four issues a year, now in its third volume. Back issues are reprinted on demand, which says more than any award.
